3.4 Designs and uses instructional strategies, innovations, and activities that are research-based and reflective of best practice
Marzano Research
"A specific instructional strategy is effective only when used in the specific situation for which it was designed. Effective pedagogy involves a variety of interacting components." (Marzano, Robert. "Setting the Record Straight on "High-Yield" Strategies." Kappan 91, no.1 (2009): 30-37.
Below are examples of the implementation of Marzano's nine strategies in the classroom. They are snippets of total lesson plans which use a variety of strategies.
“The capacity of any organization to improve is directly related to its ability to recognize, acknowledge and act on its strengths and limitations.” Dr. Mark A. Elgart, AdvancED President/CEO
Reading Intervention This was our second year using the reading intervention program FAME for our 7th and 8th grade students. Letters were sent to the families during the summer informing them of this new class. There were eight 8th graders and ten 7th graders selected. While Mrs. Knobbe and Mrs. Hunke worked with these students each day for 45 minutes Sister Mary Ann taught standard Literature and Spelling to the remaining 7th and 8th grade students. Pre and post tests given to the students in the FAME program showed an increase of about 30 points from the beginning of the year.
Six Traits of Writing The faculty and staff continued to work with the Six Traits. In March the students in grades four and eight participated in the writing assessment. This year the faculty did not assess these writings. During the summer our writing coordinator has these writings assessed by professionals. In the fall we will study and compare the results. The teachers continued to build the students writing portfolios. The 8th grade writing folders were passed on to the High Schools. Reading Counts For the eighth year our media center purchased books and computer assessments for the Reading Counts program. The teachers in grades 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 make use of this program. The students are required to read so many books and take so many quizzes each quarter.
